So, what's a "pocket lesson"?
A pocket lesson leverages technology that’s been around for over twenty years to connect you to your teacher. Using a phone, or a webcam, or a tablet, or, really, whatever, you film yourself singing any song you like, in any style you like, and then you share that video with your teacher. The lesson itself is Picture-in-picture style, so you’ll get to see your performance as your teacher is chiming in with helpful tips, and personalized instructions.
Why do you call it a "pocket lesson"?
We call it a “pocket lesson” because that’s what we like to call that little window your performance is sitting in. It’s small, you know, like a pocket. We call it a “pocket lesson” because you take it with you everywhere. We call it a “pocket lesson” because “in the pocket” is R&B slang for being “in the groove,” “in sync,” “on beat.”
What's a "live lesson"?
Well, that depends. If you live in Southern California, and you feel up to driving, a live lesson is what takes place in one of our studios—pianos, professional mics, and all. If you don’t live in SoCal, or if you do live in SoCal and don’t feel like driving, then your “live” lesson is a live stream.
How do live studio and live stream lessons differ"?
Besides the obvious that one is done in our studio and the other is done online, there are some differences. Accompaniment is more dynamic in a studio, and body manipulations are easier. However, online it’s easier to focus on the fine motor movements around your lips and jaw, and they’re easier to get to, which can’t be underestimated.

Do I have to rely on karaoke tracks?
No, you don’t. Karaoke tracks are great and are a fantastic way to work on musicianship and timing. But sometimes you need the guidance of an easy to follow melody line. We’ll provide that when you need it.
What if the song I want to work on is obscure?
That’s no problem. It might not be ready the day you ask for it, we employ professional pianists to help create backing tracks for our students. If you and your teacher decide you need it to make progress on your song, then you’ll have it.
We offer monthly workshops that are open to online and in person participants.
We cover a variety of topics, from styling, to vocal health and wellness, teaching tips, mic technique, and how to prepare for an audition. They’re open to everyone, and they’re free for our members.
Every week we release a new instructional video.
These short, professionally produced videos cover a variety of topics in an authoritative but accessible manner. Subjects range from anatomy and physiology, to vocal science and contemporary styling, plus numerous others. Whether you’re serious or simply curious, our videos will help you expand your knowledge.
Like every other physical activity, exercise paves the way for improved performance.
But one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why we’ve recorded hundreds of vocal exercises (with more added all the time), so you can improve your range, power, agility, and coordination. With practice you’ll be able to train your voice to do things you didn’t know were possible.

MEET YOUR CREW

what kind of training do teachers have?
It depends. Our teachers come to us from a variety of backgrounds, so they’ve received a variety of musical training along the way. However, once we hire them, they go through a rigorous training process, from how to run lessons efficiently, to the latest vocal research, to myth-busting facts. All of our teachers are musicians and educators.
how do we keep lessons personal?
Because our service starts with people. It starts with teachers, musicians, and dedicated professionals, and uses technology to help improve your access to them. Not only will you have your own music teacher, you’ll have your own music coordinator too. You’ll get to know them, and they’ll get to know you.

PERFORMANCE OPPS

what performance opportunities are there?
Like our “live” lessons, we offer two kinds–streaming and in-person. For streaming we use our own cloud storage, which allows us to hold online recitals, and low-key private performances without having to deal with Facebook or YouTube. For in-person, we host big events near our studios, and maintain our curated “performance opportunities” list.
our curated list
Ever wonder what coffee shops in your area have open mic nights? Trying to find a list of local children’s theaters? This is the place to go. Right now this is only available in Southern California, but we have plans to expand this service nationally, so stay tuned!
